Friendships Old and New

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like “What about lunch?”

― A.A. Milne

We had lunch with friends on Sunday, a beautiful time of sharing a meal together, sharing stories together, sharing life together. It made me think about friendships; old friends and new friends. Old friends are those back in Australia, the one’s we did life with during our childhood and adolescence and twenty-somethings. New friends are those we’ve met in Geneva, the transient one’s we currently do life with.

“The best mirror is an old friend.”

― George Herbert

There will always be a part of my heart that belongs to my dear friends in Australia. We don’t speak as often as we would like but when we do there’s something that feels so comfortable and warm and homely. We haven’t seen each other for 2 years but I know that when we do see each other in December it will be just as it always was, as if we’ve been there all along. They know my history, they know my struggles, they have cried with me in pain and celebrated with me in joy. My husband tells me that friends are for a season but for me, these girls are here in my life for life.

“True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost.”

― Charles Caleb Colton

My new friends in Geneva make each day more exciting. We are all on different adventures, traveling in different directions and our friendship is fleeting. It is here that I have learned the value of investing in new friendships even though they might not last for very long. I am learning that the friends I do have here are very dear to me and there will also be a part of my heart that belongs to them. Yes, these friends are for season and yes I may never see some of them again or speak to them again once we part our ways for opposite ends of the earth but the life I have lived with these ladies during this season of my life will forever be remembered.

To all my nearest and dearest, thank you for doing life with me, my life is better for having you in it.
