Summer in Geneva

29 Aug

This week could definitely be classified as Autumn weather. Cold nights and frosty mornings leading to mildly sunny days. But before I let the pining for summer begin, here’s the best of Geneva in Summer and what we’ve been up to (other than running, shock!).

Fêtes de Genève

Every July/August, Geneva comes to life for 10 days. With over 150 free concerts, a Miss Geneva contest, 5 kilometers of fair rides, water sport competitions, and more than 150 food and drink stands, the festival draws to a close with an hour long Grand Fireworks display. The Holy Cow burgers and fries were my best food experience at the festival this year. I kid you not, these fireworks are the most incredible I have ever seen and I don’t plan on missing one while we’re here.

Outdoor Cinema

Two outdoor cinemas are set up in Geneva every year, the OrangeCinema (ticketed) on the right bank and the CineTransat (free) on the left bank. The CineTransat is a blow up screen set up in the Parc de la Perle du Lac and seating is on the grass. We saw Indiana Jones : Raiders of the Lost Ark there this year which was super cool because it was also a themed night so there were many people dressed as Indiana Jones. I’m not sure if this happens in the English-speaking world but as soon as Harrison Ford graced the screen, everyone clapped and cheered and this behaviour continued every time he was successful in overcoming a foe (every 20 minutes or so then). BYO BBQ and smoke out your neighbours is also the thing to do here.

Swimming in the Lake

Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Europe and is perfectly clear which is perfect for swimming 🙂 Sunbathing, picnics, BBQs and walks by the lake are also enjoyable experiences.

The Bains des Paquis

The Bains des Paquis is historically the public municipal baths but is now not only a popular swimming area but also houses a cafe, massage rooms, hammam, and other events during the summer. This place is packed all through summer and one of the reasons could definitely be the plate of the day (plat du jour) available from the cafe; usually 15fr and the serving sizes are decent. Bargain! We just love hanging out down here and enjoying the water and the views.

Summer really is the best time to be in Geneva so come on over next year and enjoy this beautiful town I temporarily call home.
